Netflix vs Disney+: Which Streaming Service Is Actually Worth It?

Β·4 min read

Netflix Just Got More Expensive β€” Again

Netflix Standard now costs $15.49/month. Disney+ Standard? $9.99. That's a pretty significant gap, and it raises a fair question: is Netflix actually worth paying 50% more? I alternated between both services for three months, comparing content libraries, video quality, and day-to-day usability. Here's what I found.

Pricing Breakdown

Ad-supported$7.99/mo$9.99/mo (with ads)

Premium$22.99/mo$13.99/mo

No matter how you slice it, Netflix is pricier. The Premium tier difference alone is $9/month β€” that adds up to over $100 a year.

Content Library

Netflix has roughly 17,000+ titles in its library. Disney+ sits around 2,500, though adding the Star brand content (available in many markets) bumps it closer to 5,000.

Numbers-wise, Netflix wins by a landslide. But the real question is whether there's stuff you actually want to watch.

Where Netflix dominates:

  • Massive original series catalog (Squid Game, Wednesday, The Night Agent)
  • International originals from dozens of countries
  • Reality shows and documentaries
  • Stand-up comedy specials

Where Disney+ shines:

  • The entire Marvel Cinematic Universe
  • Star Wars franchise (The Mandalorian, Ahsoka)
  • Pixar and Disney classic animation
  • National Geographic documentaries

Here's how I'd describe the difference: Netflix is the service you open when you're thinking "I want to watch something." Disney+ is the one you open when you know exactly what you're there for. The sheer volume gap is real and you feel it.

Original Content Quality

Looking at the biggest releases from 2025–2026:

Netflix highlights:

  • Squid Game Season 3
  • Wednesday Season 2
  • The Night Agent Season 3
  • Black Mirror Season 7

Disney+ highlights:

  • Avengers: Doomsday tie-in series
  • The Mandalorian & Grogu (theatrical crossover)
  • Percy Jackson Season 2
  • Expanding international original slate

Netflix wins on genre diversity. Disney+ wins on franchise power. If you're a Marvel or Star Wars fan, skipping Disney+ isn't really an option.

UI and User Experience

Netflix's recommendation algorithm is still best-in-class. It learns your viewing habits and the suggestions are genuinely useful β€” I'd say about 7 out of 10 recommendations actually interest me.

Disney+ has a cleaner, more organized interface. Content is sorted by brand β€” Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, Disney, National Geographic β€” which makes browsing intuitive. But the recommendation engine is noticeably weaker. It tends to push new releases rather than personalized picks.

The biggest day-to-day difference I noticed was subtitle and dub support. Netflix offers way more language options for most titles. Disney+ has improved, but there are still gaps.

For Families

If you have kids, Disney+ is a no-brainer value-wise. Disney animations, Pixar films, and National Geographic educational content give you a huge library of kid-safe material. The Kids profile feature works well too β€” it's properly locked down.

Netflix has a Kids section, but it's fundamentally an adult-oriented service. For family viewing, Disney+ is the more natural fit.

Pros and Cons

Netflix

Pros:

  • Massive content library with unmatched genre diversity
  • Strong original programming across multiple languages
  • Best-in-class recommendation algorithm
  • Budget ad-supported tier available

Cons:

  • Most expensive major streaming service
  • Frequent price increases
  • Account sharing crackdowns in most regions

Disney+

Pros:

  • Significantly cheaper at every tier
  • Exclusive Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar content
  • Excellent for families with children
  • Growing international original slate

Cons:

  • Smaller overall content library
  • Limited adult-oriented content
  • Weaker recommendation system
  • Some titles lack full subtitle/dub support

The Verdict

Pick Netflix if: you want variety across genres, you enjoy international series, or you're primarily watching solo or as a couple. If you want to always have something new to watch when you open the app, Netflix delivers.

Pick Disney+ if: you're a Marvel or Star Wars fan, you have kids, or you want solid streaming without paying a premium. It also works great as a secondary subscription alongside another service.

Honestly, the ideal setup is both. But if I had to choose just one, Netflix's content diversity makes it the more versatile pick for most people. That said, Disney+ is so reasonably priced that adding it as a second subscription is an easy recommendation.
