Apple Watch Ultra 3 vs Galaxy Watch 7: The Ultimate Smartwatch Showdown

Β·6 min read

I Bought Both. No Regrets (Mostly).

I went looking for one smartwatch and came home with two. Classic move. I wore the Apple Watch Ultra 3 for a month, then switched to the Galaxy Watch 7 for another month. Here's what I found after living with both β€” and honestly, the winner depends entirely on who you are.

Price and Core Specs

That's a $500 price gap. The question everyone asks: is the Ultra 3 really worth nearly three times the price? It depends on what you need, and I'll break that down.

Design and Comfort

The Ultra 3 is a big watch. At 49mm with a titanium case, it commands attention on your wrist. The first couple of days I thought it was too chunky, but I got used to it fast. The flat sapphire crystal and raised edges actually protect the display surprisingly well β€” I banged it on a doorframe twice with zero damage. The action button is genuinely useful during workouts, especially with gloves on.

The Galaxy Watch 7 in 40mm is a completely different vibe. Light, minimal, and office-friendly. Nobody looks twice at it during a meeting. The aluminum body keeps the weight down, and it honestly looks more like a regular watch. If you want something subtle for daily wear, this is the one.

Health and Fitness Features

Body CompositionNoYes (BIA)
Sleep TrackingYesYes (Sleep coaching)

Depth GaugeYes (dive-rated)No

The Galaxy Watch 7's body composition analysis blew me away. You touch two fingers to the side buttons, wait 15 seconds, and it gives you body fat percentage, skeletal muscle mass, and body water readings. I cross-checked with a professional InBody machine at my gym β€” it was within 2-3% accuracy. That's genuinely impressive for a wrist device.

The Ultra 3 goes the other direction. It's basically a dive computer on your wrist. 100m water resistance, depth gauge, water temperature sensing β€” if you're into scuba or freediving, you can leave your dedicated dive computer at home.

Battery Life β€” The Real Dealbreaker

Ultra 3 claims 72 hours, and it delivers. With Always-On Display active and about an hour of daily workout tracking, I consistently got two and a half to three days. I took it on a weekend camping trip without a charger and came back with battery to spare.

Galaxy Watch 7 says 40 hours on paper. In real life, with AOD on and normal use, I got about a day and a half. Turn off AOD and you can stretch it to two days, but who wants a blank screen on their wrist? Plan on charging every night.

Software Ecosystem

This is where the conversation gets real. If you have an iPhone, get the Apple Watch. If you have a Samsung or Android phone, get the Galaxy Watch. Cross-platform compatibility is basically nonexistent for both.

The Ultra 3 on watchOS has a polished app ecosystem. Third-party apps are well-optimized, and Siri has gotten noticeably better. The satellite connectivity feature is the standout β€” in areas with no cellular coverage, you can send SOS messages. For hikers and mountaineers, this could literally save your life.

Galaxy Watch 7 on Wear OS 5 excels with Google integration. Google Maps navigation works right on your wrist, and Google Assistant is smooth and responsive. Samsung Health's data visualization is honestly better than Apple's Health app for tracking trends over time β€” the charts are cleaner and more intuitive.

Pros and Cons

Apple Watch Ultra 3

Pros:

  • 72-hour battery eliminates charging anxiety
  • Titanium case is incredibly durable
  • 100m water resistance with real dive features
  • Satellite SOS for off-grid emergencies
  • Dual speakers deliver excellent call quality

Cons:

  • $799 is a steep price tag
  • 49mm case is too big for smaller wrists
  • Zero Android compatibility
  • No body composition analysis

Galaxy Watch 7

Pros:

  • $299 is genuinely affordable
  • Body composition analysis via BIA
  • Two size options (40mm and 44mm)
  • Rich Wear OS 5 app ecosystem
  • Lightweight and comfortable for all-day wear

Cons:

  • Battery barely lasts a full day with AOD
  • Aluminum case isn't as rugged
  • Limited functionality without a Samsung/Android phone
  • Not suitable for extreme sports environments

The Verdict

If you're into outdoor adventures, extreme sports, or diving β€” get the Ultra 3. The battery life, durability, water resistance, and satellite connectivity make it unmatched in its class. Yes, $799 is a lot, but it replaces a dive computer and a dedicated hiking GPS, which makes the math work out.

If you want a daily health companion and smart notifications β€” get the Galaxy Watch 7. Body composition tracking, sleep coaching, and the full Wear OS app library at $299 is outstanding value. It does everything most people actually need from a smartwatch.

Personally, I ended up keeping the Ultra 3 on my wrist. The honest reason? Battery life. Not having to charge every night is worth the premium to me. Your priorities might be different β€” and that's exactly why the Galaxy Watch 7 exists.
